However, prior to enrolling in a medical course in the country, it is important for students to be aware of the requirements for the application.

Qualification requirements for studying medicine

Medical courses and degrees are considered second-entry degrees. This means that students cannot enroll directly in a bachelor’s degree in medicine. They need an undergraduate or bachelor’s degree for applying to a college or a school that offers professional medical courses.

Qualifications required to study medicine
Students have the flexibility of enrolling in a progressive and complete medicine study course that generally lasts for four years. The qualifications needed for studying medicine in the country include the following.

  • You must complete your high school diploma with a decent CGPA.
  • You ought to have completed an undergraduate degree in Science with satisfactory scores in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  • Your GPA for the undergraduate course that you have completed must not be less than 3.0.
  • Apart from academics, you must be actively involved in other non-study and extracurricular activities, which may include sports, music etc.
  • Your scores in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be high as it measures the efficiency of English language skills of non-native speakers.
  • You must present recommendation letters from science professors, physicians, non-science professors, and pre-med advising committee members.
  • You must get a good score in Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). MCAT is an examination that is conducted by AAMC or Association of American Medical Colleges and is a mandatory requirement for all the candidates willing to study medicine in the country. This examination determines your aptitude towards science-related knowledge and critical thinking.
  • There are other additional qualifications that also need to be met for studying medicine in the country and these include completing paramedical courses such as:

    • Mathematics with either statistics or calculus for a year
    • General chemistry in college for one year
    • Chemistry and biology for minimum 24 semester hours
    • General physics in college for one year

    It is worth understanding that the requirements mentioned above might not be the only ones needed for studying medicine in the country. To become a doctor in the country isn’t very easy and you need to be prepared for it.
